Location:

Description of the area:

Euboea - pronounced Evvia in modern Greek - is after Crete the largest Greek island.
Karystos is a typical Greek provincial town with ca. 5000 inhabitants; it is located at a picturesque bay oriented towards the mainland.
The town lives mainly off fishing, wine and olive production, sheep and goat herding as well as the stone quarries located in the hinterland.
Although well frequented on summer week-ends and in the high season, Karystos is by no means a typical tourist town because there is no mass tourism of any kind. Aside from friends of hiking and sailing, it is mainly Greeks who - mostly in August - spend their holidays here.
A number of attractive neoclassical public and private buildings have survived from the time when the town was refounded by King Otto, the Bavarian ruler of all Hellenes.
A small archaeological museum is part of the municipal cultural center.
